Configure a Cross Country Scoreboard with FinishLynx LIFs

Preface

If you are doing splits, have multiple computers sending multiple splits, have a race with greater than 400 runners, or don’t have the NCP plugin, this is the cross country scoreboard for you. If not, click here to check out our LSS scoreboard; it’s a bit easier to set up on a meet-by-meet basis.

Description

This scoreboard displays live data from FinishLynx LIFs as opposed to scoreboard messages.

This LIF scoreboard offers several advantages over our original LSS scoreboard, including:

  1. You can show splits in a grid instead of only of viewing split at a time.
  2. You can edit any split at any time. The original scoreboard wouldn’t allow you to edit anything before the previous split.
  3. This scoreboard is more accurate as it’s always displaying the latest data from FinishLynx.

Prerequisites

  1. Download AthleticLIVE Local version 2.4.1 or greater.
  2. Create a meet. In the F.A.T. Timing System drop down, select “Finishlynx XC LIF Scoreboard”
  3. Modify your FinishLynx settings to auto save lifs every few seconds.
    1. Click “File”
    2. Hold Ctrl + Shift and click “Options”.
    3. Click the “+” next to “Database”.
    4. Click the “+” next to “LIF”.
    5. Click “AutoSave”.
    6. Enter “5”. (This will update the live scoreboard every 5 seconds. You can go as low as 3, but do not enter 0, 1, or 2. It will overload the system. We hope to handle 1-second uploads before the end of the 2019 season)
    7. Click “OK”
    8. Restart FinishLynx.
  4. Make note of the output directory in FinishLynx (File -> Options -> Database -> Output Directory). You will need to enter this into AthleticLIVE Local.

WARNING: There is a known issue with FinishLynx autosaving to a networked, non-local computer. If you lose the network during a race, FinishLynx will crash. To ensure this doesn’t happen, autosave the LIF to the local computer.

Setup

When you use this scoreboard, you must identify which computers are sending splits and which computers are sending finish times. There are two common use cases and one rare case:

  1. Use Case #1 (Common): One computer sends all splits and finishes.
  2. Use Case #2 (Common): One computer sends splits and a second computer sends finishes.
  3. Use Case #3 (Rare): Mulitple computers send splits. For example, Computer 1 sends split 1, Computer 2 sends split 3, and Computer 3 sends the finish.

Throughout the AthleticLIVE Admin and AthleticLIVE Local, we refer to each computer that sends LIFs as a LIF machine.

You must download and run AthleticLIVE Local on every LIF machine.

Below, we will illustrate how to define LIF machines on admin.athletic.live and in AthleticLIVE Local. All of these assume that computers will not change per-meet. You can override per-event if needed.

Use Case 1: All splits and finish on the same machine.

In admin.athletic.live

  1. From the admin meet detail page, click “LIF Machines”.
  2. Click the “+” to add a LIF Machine.
  3. Enter a name. Must be all lower case letters and underscores. We recommend “comp1”.
  4. Check “Has All Splits.”
  5. Check “Has Finish.”
  6. Leave “Split Numbers” blank.
  7. Click Submit.

In AthleticLIVE Local

  1. From the dashboard, scroll to “FinishLynx XC LIF Connection Settings”.
  2. Click “Edit” under LIF Directory.
  3. In the Name field, enter “comp1”.
  4. In the LIF Directory field, enter the FinishLynx Output Directory.
  5. Click Submit.

Choose your meet, and you’ll be all set to go.

Use Case 2: Splits on Computer 1, Finish on Computer 2.

In admin.athletic.live

  1. From the admin meet detail page, click “LIF Machines”.
  2. Click the “+” to add a LIF Machine. We’ll do the split computer first.
  3. Enter a name. Must be all lower case letters and underscores. We recommend “split_comp”.
  4. Check “Has All Splits.”
  5. Leave “Split Numbers” blank.
  6. Click the “+ Add” button to add another LIF machine.
  7. Enter a name. We recommend “finish_comp”.
  8. Check “Has Finish.”
  9. Leave “Split Numbers” blank.
  10. Click Submit.

In AthleticLIVE Local

On the split machine:

  1. From the dashboard, scroll to “FinishLynx XC LIF Connection Settings”.
  2. Click “Edit” under LIF Directory.
  3. In the Name field, enter “split_comp”.
  4. In the LIF Directory field, enter the FinishLynx Output Directory.
  5. Click Submit.
  6. Select your meet.

On the finish machine:

  1. From the dashboard, scroll to “FinishLynx XC LIF Connection Settings”.
  2. Click “Edit” under LIF Directory.
  3. In the Name field, enter “finish_comp”.
  4. In the LIF Directory field, enter the FinishLynx Output Directory.
  5. Click Submit.
  6. Select your meet.

Use Case 3: Computer 1 sends split 1, Computer 2 sends split 2, and Computer 3 sends the finish.

In admin.athletic.live

  1. From the admin meet detail page, click “LIF Machines”.
  2. Click the “+” to add a LIF Machine. We’ll do the first split computer first.
  3. Enter a name. Must be all lower case letters and underscores. We recommend “split_1_comp”.
  4. Enter “0” in the “Split Numbers” field. (Splits start at 0. Therefore, the first split is split 0).
  5. Click the “+ Add” button to add another LIF machine.
  6. Enter a name. We recommend “split_2_comp”.
  7. Enter “1” in the “Split Numbers” field. (Splits start at 0. Therefore, the second split is split 1).
  8. Click the “+ Add” button to add another LIF machine.
  9. Enter a name. We recommend “finish_comp”.
  10. Enter “2” in the “Split Numbers” field. (Splits start at 0. We want to show the finish split in the compiled grid. Since the finish split is the third split, enter “2”).
  11. Check “Has Finish.”
  12. Click Submit.

  5. Click Submit.
  6. Select your meet.

Overriding per-event.

There may be a use case, such as in a college meet, where the number of splits is not equal between races and you need to identify splits and finish differently for each event. For example:

Womens 6K Computer 1 has split 1 (2K) and the finish. Computer 2 has split 2 (4K).

Mens 8K Computer 1 has split 1 (2K) and the finish. Computer 2 has split 2 (4K) and split 3 (6K).

To override per-event:

  1. From the admin meet detail page, click “Manage Events”.
  2. Click the down arrow next to the actions button and “Set Splits”.
  3. Enter all of your split names. Click here for more info.
  4. Add splits machines for the event. In the use case above, here’s how you would do it:

Womens 6K Event LIF Machines

Machine 1

Machine 2

Mens 8K Event LIF Machines

Machine 1

Machine 2

Note how the names don’t change per-event. Only the definition of splits and finishes do. We recommend using the same name for each machine between events. Otherwise you’ll have to restart AthleticLIVE Local at the start of each event.
